The Low Down On Dirt

Perhaps you're thinking that soil is the least fun part of the whole garden picture. But without a doubt, it is the most important. Poor soils account for the majority of garden problems: digging is difficult, nutrients don't do what they're supposed to do, growth is stunted and we get few blooms and lousy fruit and vegetables.

Hemerocallis

The Daylily is a perennial that has been cultivated for over a thousand years.

Here in California, the Daylily is an excellent choice as an accent plant or in mass plantings. The Daylily will begin to flower in May and continue into September. The name comes from the fact that these plants (native forms) produce flowers that last all day and then produce new flowers the next day. Today we can select from cultivars that produce flowers that last for several days and the variety of size and availability of flower colors are too numerous to list.

Daylilies prefer a moist soil and can adapt to almost any soil conditions including clay. The best flowering occurs in full sun but most cultivars will adapt to some shade.
