Most experts agree that the tastiest tomatoes are grown in the richest soils. Unfortunately, dark, fertile loam doesn't happen by itself. To get your garden in the best shape possible, you'll need to spend an afternoon digging deep beds and amending the soil. And once you get the soil in shape, growing tomatoes gets easy.
Tomatoes like full-sun and lots of warmth so, start in the sunniest spot of the garden. Dig a wide hole for each plant. Incorporate 50% amendment in the backfill. Kellogg's EarthRichTM is a good choice with ingredients like forest humus, rice hulls, chicken manure and kelp meal. Avoid cow manure products because they contain too much salt for the tomato's discriminating roots.
Mix a handful of Kellogg's Tomato & Vegetable Fertilizer into each hole. Kellogg's Tomato & Vegetable Fertilizer is high in phosphorus and low in nitrogen: a perfect combination that stimulates fruit and flowers but not unnecessary green growth.
Build and install staking systems now, so you'll upset tomato roots less, later.
