#tbt to the creation of the Janice Kellogg rose in celebration of National Rose Month
Unveiled in 2005 to celebrate Kellogg Garden Product’s 80th anniversary, the Janice Kellogg rose, which took a year and a half to develop, was named in honor of Kellogg’s then former president and chairman of the board.
A longtime rose aficionado, Janice Kellogg appreciated the power a single rose held.
“Roses are so beautiful. There is such serenity about a single rose. I love arranging them in groups, but I love it when I can bring in a single rose and put it in a vase, for it to be by itself and show off its beauty,” Janice said.
The rose was developed by Star Roses after Star Roses sales representative Steve Bening approached Janice’s daughter, Kathy Kellogg Johnson, regarding the rose. Star Roses had just completed development on a new rose, one that was really fragrant, unique and beautiful, but couldn’t find a name for it. So Janice’s name was submitted and trademarked, and the Janice Kellogg rose was born!
The honor was overwhelming for Janice as she expressed her pride and joy to the gardening community.
“It’s very difficult for me to express how much appreciation I have for everyone who was involved with this project, and the Star Rose Growers. It’s something that I never dreamed would happen; I never even thought about it. It has just really awed me, from the moment I heard about it,” said Kellogg.
