What is Raised Bed Gardening, Anyway?

We’re glad you asked!

In its simplest form, raised bed gardening refers to any type of garden that sits on top of the existing soil rather than being dug into the ground. Raised garden beds take many forms, sizes, and shapes and are often used as a way for city-dwellers to grow fresh fruits, vegetables, and plants in otherwise soil-barren environments, but don’t be fooled; country living folk love raised garden beds, too!

You can create a raised garden bed frame from various lengths of wood (we recommend cedar), concrete, or rock containment units, or a pre-built raised bed structure and place them just about anywhere they can get adequate sunlight. In addition to using our raised bed soil, you can make your own compost and employ the hugelkultur method of layering tree roots and rotting wood within your raised garden bed to further support your plants.

For the “newbie” gardener, all of these gardening terms can seem overwhelming. As you continue to read through our blog posts and immerse yourself in the world of organic gardening and raised beds, you’ll quickly gain the knowledge, understanding, and appreciation for the role different plants, beneficial bugs, and organic materials play in growing your fruits, vegetables, and ornamentals.
